Founder, no benefits yet? Start with the basics

Is this you? A founder or cofounder with no benefits plan yet.

No employer plan behind you yet. A few practical steps can cover the essentials while the company grows.

We help founders separate personal income risk from company risk, then review key-person protection, early employee benefits and scalable planning priorities.

The Risk Assessment is a free educational questionnaire about your income, existing protection, business and planning priorities. It adapts to your answers: 15–19 questions, with no medical questions. Allow about 5 minutes (estimated; take longer if you need).

You'll get your score and a call offer, not a sales pitch. The current Calendly session is 60 minutes.

What to set up first

  1. Personal income protection for you, since there is no employer plan behind you.
  2. A signed shareholder or cofounder agreement that says what happens if someone dies or can't work.
  3. Funding for that agreement, so the plan works if it is ever needed.
  4. Key-person coverage once the company depends on specific people.
  5. Basic health and dental, or a spending account, when you start hiring.

A practical starting order, not a requirement. Your priorities may differ. General information only; not tax, legal or investment advice.

Where your plan can be exposed

  • No employer plan: as a founder you may have no disability, health or life coverage of your own.
  • Key-person risk: the company may depend heavily on one founder's work and relationships.
  • Cofounder risk: if a cofounder dies or cannot work, the shareholder agreement may have no funding behind it.

Questions and answers

What is key-person insurance?

It is coverage a business may own on an essential person, designed to provide funds after an insured event subject to the policy terms and claim approval.

When should a startup consider employee benefits?

The right timing depends on hiring goals, budget, participation and available plan designs. A review can compare insured benefits and spending-account approaches.
